A stochastic viability approach to ecosystem-based fisheries management ArchiMer
Doyen, Luc; Thebaud, Olivier; Bene, Christopher; Martinet, V.; Gourguet, S.; Bertignac, Michel; Fifas, Spyros; Blanchard, Fabian.
Academia and management agencies show a growing interest for ecosystem-based fishery management (EBFM). However, the way to operationalize this approach remains challenging. The present paper illustrates how the concepts of stochastic co-viability, which accounts for dynamic complexities, uncertainties, risk and sustainability constraints, can be useful for the implementation of EBFM. In the present case, this concept is used to identify fishing strategies that satisfy both ecological conservation and economic sustainability in a multi-species, multi-fleet context. Economic Viability Analysis (EVA) and the broader Co-Viability Analysis (CVA), are proposed to expand the usual Population Viability Analysis (PVA) and precautionary approach. An illustration is...

Algumas características da reprodução e ontogênese de Epilachna paenulata (Germar) (Coleoptera, Coccinellidae, Epilachninae) Zoologia
Ganho,Norma G.; Marinoni,Renato C..
Epilachna paenulata (Germar, 1824) was reared feeding on pumpkin leaves (Cucurbita pepo Lourt.) in laboratory conditions at temperatures of 20±0,5ºC, relative humidity of 65±0,5% and 12 hour photoperiod. Groups of fecunded and non-fecunded females were studied. The ovarioles showed four developing stages during egg production, morphologically alike for fecunded and non-fecunded females, but differing in the duration time of the stages. Each ovarium has 24 ovarioles on average, less than any other species known into the genus, and all ovarioles are physiologically active at each oviposition. The mean number of ovarioles is lower when compared with the other species of Epilachninae known. Fecunded and non-fecunded females showed a similar preoviposition...

ALT-C, a disintegrin-like Cys-rich protein from Bothrops alternatus, increases skeletal myoblast viability J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Mesquita-Ferrari,RA; Moraes,CK de; Micocci,KC; Selistre-de-Araújo,HS.
ALT-C, an ECD motif (glutamic acid, cysteine, aspartic acid) disintegrin from Bothrops alternatus snake venom, induces α2β1 integrin-mediated signaling and neutrophil chemotaxis. In vitro, in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), ALT-C induces cell proliferation, thus showing an interesting potential for tissue regeneration studies. This work aimed to evaluate the influence of ALT-C in myoblast viability and differentiation. Myoblasts were obtained from hind limb muscles of 3 to 4-day old Wistar rats. The cells were incubated with ALT-C at different concentrations and incubation periods were followed by total RNA isolation. cDNA synthesis and real time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were performed with primers of myoD as well as of both (slow...

ATP content and viability of spermatozoa drive variability of fertilization success in the Pacific oyster ( Crassostrea gigas ) ArchiMer
Boulais, Myrina; Soudant, Philippe; Le Goic, Nelly; Quere, Claudie; Boudry, Pierre; Suquet, Marc.
Fertilization of the oocyte is a critical process of sexual reproduction depending among other factors on spermatozoa functionality. Mitochondria participate in many crucial processes for spermatozoa motility and fertilizing ability. The Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, is characterized by a high inter-individual variability of its reproductive success which has been shown to be partially due to the variability of gamete quality. The present study explored spermatozoa characteristics such as: i) relationships among mitochondrial functionality (ATP content, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), reactive oxygen species production); sperm viability (percentages of live, dying, and dead); and motility; and ii) their involvement in inter-oyster variability...

Beijerinckia derxii stimulates the viability of non-N2-fixing bacteria in nitrogen-free media BJM
Barbosa,Heloiza R.; Thuler,Daniela Strauss; Shirakawa,Márcia Aiko; Miyasaka,Natália R. S..
The interactions between the nitrogen-fixing microorganism Beijerinckia derxii with two non-diazotrophic bacteria, either Escherichia coli or a facultative sulphur-oxidizing chemolitotroph, were studied in mixed cultures. Direct and indirect contact between B. derxii and E. coli were tested. B. derxii increased CFU numbers and/or maintained the viability of the non-diazotrophic bacteria, but neither growth nor nitrogenase activity of the nitrogen-fixing bacterium were affected by either partner.

Cross-disciplinary approaches for measuring parasitic helminth viability and phenotype Anais da ABC (AABC)
Peak,Emily; Hoffmann,Karl F.
Parasitic worms (helminths) within the Phyla Nematoda and Platyhelminthes are responsible for some of the most debilitating and chronic infectious diseases of human and animal populations across the globe. As no subunit vaccine for any parasitic helminth is close to being developed, the frontline strategy for intervention is administration of therapeutic, anthelmintic drugs. Worryingly, and unsurprising due to co-evolutionary mechanisms, many of these worms are developing resistance to the limited compound classes currently being used. This unfortunate reality has led to a renaissance in next generation anthelmintic discovery within both academic and industrial sectors. However, a major bottleneck in this process is the lack of quantitative methods for...

Ecological-economic modelling for the sustainable management of biodiversity ArchiMer
Doyen, Luc; Cisse, Abdoul; Gourguet, Sophie; Mouysset, L.; Hardy, Pierre-yves; Bene, Christophe; Blanchard, Fabian; Jiguet, Frederic; Pereau, J.-c.; Thebaud, Olivier.
Terrestrial and marine biodiversity provides the basis for both ecosystems functioning and numerous commodities or services that underpin human well-being. From several decades, alarming trends have been reported worldwide for both biodiversity and ecosystem services. Therefore the sustainable management of biodiversity requires a double viewpoint balancing ecological conservation with the welfare of human societies. Understanding the underlying trade-offs, synergies and interactions imposes the development of interdisciplinary researches and methods. In that respect, bio-economic or ecological economic modeling is likely to play a major role. The present paper intends to elicit the key features, strengths and challenges of bio-economic approaches...

Reconciling food security, economic development and biodiversity conservation is a key challenge, especially in the face of the demographic transition characterizing many countries in the world. Fisheries and marine ecosystems constitute a difficult application of this bio-economic challenge. Many experts and scientists advocate an ecosystem approach to manage marine socio-ecosystems for their sustainability and resilience. However, the ways by which to operationalize ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) remain poorly specified. We propose a specific methodological framework-viability modelling-to do so. We show how viability modelling can be applied using four contrasted case-studies: two small-scale fisheries in South America and Pacific and two...

Ecoviability for small-scale fisheries in the context of food security constraints ArchiMer
Cisse, Abdoul; Doyen, L.; Blanchard, Fabian; Bene, Christophe; Pereau, J. -c..
This paper applies a stochastic viability approach to a tropical small-scale fishery, offering a theoretical and empirical example of ecosystem-based fishery management approach that accounts for food security. The model integrates multi-species, multi-fleet and uncertainty as well as profitability, food production, and demographic growth. It is calibrated over the period 2006–2010 using monthly catch and effort data from the French Guiana's coastal fishery, involving thirteen species and four fleets. Using projections at the horizon 2040, different management strategies and scenarios are compared from a viability viewpoint, thus accounting for biodiversity preservation, fleet profitability and food security. The analysis shows that under certain...
